Cecily Neville, Duchess of York, meets Queen Margaret of Anjou in the spring of 1453 - print from a painting by Graham Turner Duchess Cecily's Supplication Ref: Gic-G366

Cecily Neville, Duchess of York, is granted an audience with Queen Margaret, on her way back to London from a pilgrimage to give thanks for her pregnancy at the shrine of Our Lady at Walsingham in the spring of 1453.

Following the debacle of 1452, the disgraced Duke of York was keeping a low-profile at Ludlow, and Cecily's approach to the queen is an attempt to persuade her to intercede with the king on her husband's behalf and encourage him to accept York back into his 'grace and benevolent favor'.

On the wall of the chamber is a tapestry depicting St. Margaret (the patron saint of childbirth), in the vase are marguerites (the flower she shared her name with), and at her feet is a small dog. A letter from King Louis of France written straight after Margaret's death in 1482 suggests she had a passion for dogs, for it says that her dogs were all that remained of her possessions. He sent an equerry 'to bring me all the dogs you have had from the late queen of England. You know she has made me her heir, and that this is all I shall get; also it is what I love best.'
