'What Mercy for Traitors?' - The Death of Simon de Montfort at Evesham 'What Mercy for Traitors?' - The Death of Simon de Montfort at Evesham Ref: GT-285C

Early on Tuesday 4th August 1265, at the battle of Evesham, a chosen band of killers forced their way through the press to strike down the leader of the baronial cause, Simon de Montfort. Their leader 'struck him through the neck with his lance, and it was Sir Roger de Mortimer, for he could be recognised by his armour'. Hugh Despenser was cut down at Simon's side, and at least 34 other rebel knights perished in the massacre.
