Albert Ball SE5 Original Painting by Graham Turner GAvA The SE5 Proves its Worth Ref: GT-33B

Captain Albert Ball engages an Albatros CIII north of Cambrai on 23rd April 1917.

After 56 Squadron had been equipped with the new SE5 single seaters, Ball still preferred to use his Nieuport on lone patrols, but when this was damaged in an early morning encounter on 23rd April, he took up SE5 A4850 and soon ran into a flight of Albatros scouts, downing one. As he returned to his airfield he encountered a lone Albatros CIII observation plane from Fliegerabteilung 7, fired 40 rounds into it, wounding the observer, and forcing the crippled German plane to the ground.

Bristol F2A Original Painting by Graham Turner GAvA An Inauspicious Start for the Bristol Fighter Ref: GT-33C

On the morning of 5th April 1917, Captain William Robinson, who had been awarded the Victoria Cross for shooting down a German airship in 1916, leads a flight of six new 48 Squadron Bristol F2As on their first combat patrol, when they are intercepted by five Albatros D.IIIs from Jasta 11, led by Manfred von Richthofen.

The Bristol would later be recognized as a powerful, maneuverable and rugged fighter, but on this occasion the pilots flew their unfamiliar new aircraft defensively, as they had flown their old BE2s; the result was catastrophic, with four of the Bristols - including Robinson - being shot down, and a fifth so badly damaged it was had to be scrapped.
