John Neville, Lord Montagu - painting by Graham Turner John Neville, Lord Montagu - original painting Ref: GT-JN

Like his father and older brother, the Earls of Salisbury and Warwick, John Neville became a crucial supporter of the House of York from the beginning of the Wars of the Roses. Captured at the Battle of Blore Heath in 1459, he was released when the duke of York was on the ascendency a year later and elevated to the peerage as Lord Montagu, only to be captured once again at the Second Battle of St. Albans, where his division took the brunt of the fighting. Fortunate to avoid execution, he was released from captivity following his cousin, Edward IV's, victory at Towton, after which he would provide loyal service to the new king, notably in the north. With victories at the battles of Hedgeley Moor and Hexham, Montagu's success was rewarded with the title of Earl of Northumberland, replacing his family's great rivals, the Percys, as the power in the region.

However, as Warwick's relationship with Edward IV deteriorated, John Neville was forced to choose between his loyalty to the king he had served so well, and his brother. The return of the Northumberland earldom to Henry Percy, and John's perceived demotion to the title of Marquess Montagu, would eventually push him into supporting his brother Warwick, and they would die together on the battlefield at Barnet in 1471.
