'Exposed' - FE2b dogfights with Manfred von Richtofen's Albatros - painting by Graham Turner Exposed - original oil painting Ref: GT-GW6

On 17th September 1916, six FE2bs from 11 Squadron RFC were escorting four bomb carrying BE2Cs from 12 Squadron when they were intercepted by Oswald Boelke and his newly formed Jasta 2. A certain Manfred von Richthofen was one of the inexperienced pilots flying their brand new Albatros aircraft, and he singled out FE2b 7018 as his target. Piloted by Second Lieutenant Lionel Morris, with Captain Tom Rees in the exposed position as observer, Richthofen attacked several times before 7018's engine was hit and stopped. Rees was killed in the fight, while Morris managed to bring the stricken aircraft down to land before he too succumbed to his injuries. They were to be the first of many to fall under the guns of von Richthofen, later known as the 'Red Baron'.

Oil on Canvas, canvas size 20" x 24" (51cm x 61cm). Painting is framed - overall size including frame is approximately 23"x 27" (59cm x 69cm)
