Sir Percival Thirlwall proudly carries the standard of King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth on 22nd August, 1485.

Sir Percival would hold onto the Standard until the last, as described in the Ballad of Bosworth Fielde (right) -

Henry Tudor’s standard bearer at the battle of Bosworth, Sir William Brandon was killed by King Richard III in his final charge.

Thirlwall Castle

Sir Percivall Thirlwall hailed from Thirlwall Castle, near to Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. It is quite possible that Richard, as Duke of Gloucester, met him during his time in the north or while leading the Scottish campaign.

The period of civil strife in the second half of the 15th century now known as the Wars of the Roses was one of the most dramatic and turbulent in English history.
