Painting of Gloster Gladiator by Graham Turner from Osprey book Norway 1940 Gladiators defend Oslo Ref: GT-22A

On 9th April 1940, a Norwegian Gloster Gladiator, flown by first Lieutenant Dag Krohn, dives down on three Junkers Ju 52 transports and their escorting Bf 110, which he succeeded in shooting down.

With his base at Fornebu under attack, Krohn landed on a frozen lake and managed to refuel his plane with help from local people, but by the afternoon his would be the sole surviving Norwegian fighter aircraft. At the end of the campaign in Norway Krohn escaped to Sweden and then to the UK, where he became a transport pilot for the RAF and served to the end of the war.
