Original painting by Graham Turner from the Osprey book Malplaquet 1709 Lottum's Attack on the Bois de Sars Ref: GT-MP1

At about 8am, British infantry advance against the French lines. One French observer wrote 'I could not help noticing the officer in command, who although he seemed elderly was nevertheless so active that in giving his orders there was no cessation of action anywhere, the cannon shot continued to pour forth without a break, plunged into the enemy's infantry and carried off whole ranks at a time, but a gap was no sooner created than it was immediately filled again, and they even continued their advance upon us without giving us any idea of the actual point determined on for their attack. At last the column threw itself precipitately into the wood on our left, making an assault upon that portion which had been breached.'

Irishman Peter Drake was serving with the elite French Gendarmes Anglais, and became separated from his unit when he found himself confronted b some of Von Bulow's men. 'I approached the German officer. He had a pistol cocked in his hand, aiming the muzzle of his pistol at my right shoulder and firing. I fired my carbine at the same time so that his shot and mine went off instantaneously. I shot the upper part of his head and he tumbled forward. I saw his brains come down. His ball only grazed my shoulder and tore the flesh a little.'

Marlborough's bloodiest battle

by Simon MacDowall

Includes three paintings by Graham Turner

Books bought from Studio 88 are individually hand-signed by artist Graham Turner

From the publisher's website:
A highly illustrated study of the battle of Malplaquet, the last and bloodiest of Marlborough's victories in the 18th century War of the Spanish Succession.

In 1709, after eight years of war, France was on her knees. There was not enough money left in the treasury to pay, equip or feed the army and a bad harvest led to starvation throughout the kingdom. Circumstances had worsened to the point that King Louis XIV was forced to offer to end the War of Spanish Succession on humiliating terms for his country. However, the allied powers - Britain, the Dutch Republic and the Holy Roman Empire - refused Louis' offer, believing that one more successful campaign would utterly destroy French power.

This book examines the campaign of 1709, culminating in the battle of Malplaquet, which would prove Louis' enemies disastrously wrong. Led by the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy, the allied armies achieved a tactical victory - but it was a hollow one. The allies suffered 23,000 casualties to the French 11,000 in what was the bloodiest battle of the 18th century. The scale of casualties shocked Europe and led to a reversal of fortunes, with the dismissal of Marlborough and a newly confident King Louis resolving to fight on. When the war finally ended, it did so on terms favourable to France.

In this illustrated title, Simon MacDowall examines the campaign in full and shows how, though it is generally accepted that Marlborough was never defeated, the Battle of Malplaquet was ultimately a French strategic victory.
