Military Art by Graham Turner - Original Paintings from Osprey Fort William Henry 1755-57 Siege of Fort William Henry Ref: GT-WH2

A French raiding party set fire to the sloop 'Lord Loudoun' on the night of 22/23 March 1757, having burned storehouses and other boats during previous attacks. One of the garrison recalled they 'could not see them until they had put the sloop on fire' which 'gave us such light that we could see.... we fired among them very smartly, and killed some, but as their custom is to take as good care of the dead, as of the living, we can't tell what number we killed.'

Military Art by Graham Turner - Original Paintings from Osprey Fort William Henry 1755-57 French Siege Lines - Fort William Henry Ref: GT-WH3

The Abenaki warriors were fascinated by the French siege works and great artillery pieces at Fort William Henry in August 1757. 'They were constantly around our gunners because they admired their dexterity. But their admiration was not passive. They wanted to try everything to make themselves more useful. They said they wished to become cannoniers; so they could distinguish themselves. After having fired a cannon for himself, and hitting a corner of the fort one had achieved his goal.' Impressed with his skill the French gunners tried to persuade him to try another shot but he refused. With his fellow warriors looking on with admiration 'he said the reason for his refusal was that the first was so perfect he did not want to hazard the glory in a second attempt'.

From the publisher's website:
An illustrated history of the French siege of Fort William Henry in 1757 and the most infamous incident of the French-Indian War: the massacre that inspired the book The Last of the Mohicans.

After the British garrison of Fort William Henry in the colony of New York surrendered to the besieging army of the French commander Marquis de Montcalm in August 1757, it appeared that this particular episode of the French and Indian War was over. What happened next became the most infamous incident of the war: the 'massacre' of Fort William Henry. As the garrison prepared to march for Fort Edward a flood of enraged Native Americans swept over the column, unleashing an unstoppable tide of slaughter.

James Fenimore Cooper's version has coloured our view of the incident, so what really happened? Ian Castle details updated research on the campaign, including some fascinating archaeological work that took place over the last 20 years, updating the view put forward by The Last of the Mohicans.
